From my original intro post:
Best retroed model: An older model that had a strong showing in 2017, either with original colourways, or new colourways or with slightly updated materials. Will consist of all sneakers that actually released in 2017.
#3: Air Jordan 1
I grabbed a few Jordan 1s this year, and my fave pick up story was for the All Star 1s. We had an Airbnb in the French Quarter right near the Jordan pop-up (of course we did, we plan all our trips around sneaker stores and even research likely potential locations for pop ups we think might happen. We’re crazy). We walked past it several times but there was always a line up and we didn’t want to waste our trip to New Orleans in line. Finally, we walked past one afternoon and there was no line. We went in and Boogie wit da Hoodie was playing a show and the back section of the pop up had Motorsport 4s and All Star 1s, in GS, in my size. I also got all the All Star Jordan pins and stickers. Great day.
The Jordan 1 is also closing out the year strong with the Gatorade pack. I can’t wait to see what 2018 has in store – I hear we can expect to see even more Jordan 1 heat than in 2017.
#2: Nike Air Max 1
This is crazy right? My all time favourite sneaker in it’s anniversary year and it only gets to the second spot in this contrived category of my own 2017 sneaker countdown? I honestly can’t believe I am writing this myself. But I have to put it at number 2 for the model. The sneaker had so many bangers this year and the fact that the shape is so much improved almost pushed it to number 1. I had to resist buying every single pinnacle and new colourway but did get the Masters and the Atmos elephants. It was a good year for an Air Max 1 fan.
#1: Nike Air Max 97
I put the 97 at the top of this list because I think it had farther go to than the Air Max 1 (or the Jordan 1). Those sneakers never went anywhere, they are always well-loved and always have great new and old colourways. But the return of the Air Max 97 was much more unexpected. From the small release of the Italian Silver Bullets and then their wider release to the launch of the Ultras and all the strong monotone colourways late in the year, the Air Max 97 is my number one sneaker model for 2017. Capping the year off is the run of country camos (unfortunately looking harder to get in Canada then I hoped). The AM 97 is the sneaker that converted former Jordan loyalist @laizey_bones over to the retro runner. She can’t stop wearing them.
