When I wrote my post for CanadaGotSole about my love of Jordans, the story was all about how sneakers brought me and my girlfriend together (check out the whole amazing series there). The second half of that story is her story.
She grew up in Manila obsessed with Jordan and with basketball and would wake up extra early with her little brother to watch NBA games. She always wanted a pair of Jordans (her bro wanted Payton’s The Glove).
But in the Philippines, Js cost as much as two weeks of groceries and never came in her size. She got 100 pesos every week for her allowance… Jordans were $6,000 pesos! But not being able to get the sneakers she love didn’t hold her back from playing basketball. She kept up her love of the game, starting on her University team as they claimed the national championship three times (Go Green Archers!). The team was sponsored by Nike and the women’s team received one pair of Hyperdunks each for their whole career – a huge step up but not like wearing Jordans.
When she moved to Canada 10 years ago things started to change. She has been able to realize a lot of dreams and one of them was actually getting to buy and wear the Jordans she dreamed about. She has bought multiple Js for everyone in her family – last Christmas we filled our trunk with Space Jams.
Sharing a love of these shoes with her means a lot. So crazy to think that a sneaker can mean so much for so many people.
